Tributes pour in for PM’s late brother Idrus Ibrahim from Cabinet members

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Several Cabinet ministers have expressed their condolences to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his family following the passing of his elder brother, Idrus Ibrahim, yesterday.

Idrus, 83, died at his residence in Cheruk Tokkun, Bukit Mertajam, at about 5.30 pm yesterday.

In a Facebook post, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu described the loss of a brother as deeply painful.

“May Allah SWT forgive the deceased for his shortcomings, have mercy on his soul and place him among the righteous,” he said.

Meanwhile, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he was also deeply saddened by the news of Idrus’ passing and understood the grief Anwar was experiencing following the loss of a loved one.

“As someone who has experienced the loss of a beloved family member, I share the grief that my friend (Anwar) is going through,” he said.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, meanwhile, remembered the late Idrus as a veteran of the struggle, rich in experience and wisdom, who often reminded others that the struggle of today was built on the sacrifices and loyalty of those who came before.

She said Idrus often reminded them that politics was not merely about winning or losing, but was about people and the values upheld throughout the journey.

“Every time I had the opportunity to visit him, I would return with something. Sometimes advice. Sometimes a reminder. At times, quite sharp criticism because he wanted to see this struggle remain on the right track,” she said.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan also conveyed his condolences to Anwar and the entire family, and prayed that they would be given strength, resilience and peace in facing the loss of a beloved family member.

Meanwhile, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim described the late Idrus as not merely his teacher and headmaster, but also a firm, disciplined and principled educator who always cared for his students.

“I deeply appreciate all the advice and guidance he (Idrus) gave me when I was just starting as a Member of Parliament, through to becoming a Cabinet member. I will always remember all that he had done for me,” he said. — Bernama
