Breaking: Man shot dead in home invasion south of Sydney

A man believed to be in his 20s has been shot dead during a home invasion south of Sydney, police say.

Emergency services were called to a Glen Alpine home in the city's south-west at about 3:45am.

Police said they located a man suffering a gunshot wound inside the house.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Police said officers were told unknown offenders left the scene a short time before they arrived.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.
