Could Jahmyr Gibbs Make NFL History As Detroit Lions Prepare For Minnesota Vikings?

Jahmyr Gibbs has 54 first downs through six games, and he is the only player since 1981 to pair 40 rushing first downs with 10 receiving ones. The Detroit Lions needed all of him on Sunday, a 20-17 win over the Green Bay Packers built on 116 yards and a late Jake Bates field goal. Now the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings arrive on November 1, two games ahead in the NFC North. Gibbs sits 81 yards and two touchdowns from 6,000 and 60 in his career, a mark two Hall of Famers reached in four seasons.
Why Jahmyr Gibbs' First Downs Say More Than His Touchdown Total
Nine touchdowns will get a running back noticed. First downs explain why an offense keeps winning. Every one resets the series, keeps the opposing pass rush on the field and pushes the next punt a little further away. Detroit's coaches can call a drive with that in mind, because Gibbs gives them two ways to move the chains.
Detroit Lions PR shared the stat on Monday, Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs is the only player to record 40+ rushing 1st downs & 10+ receiving 1st downs thru the first 6 games of a season since the NFL began tracking the data in 1981.
His 54 total 1st downs are the 2nd-most through the first 6 games of a season in that span."

The split behind it is clear. Gibbs has 620 rushing yards on 134 carries, a 4.6 average, plus 32 catches for 270 yards and two receiving scores. A back who catches that many passes forces linebackers to choose between stopping the run and covering him, and Green Bay never found a good answer. His 29 carries against the Packers were enough to hold off a division rival that now sits at 4-3.
What The Minnesota Vikings Game Could Do For Gibbs And Detroit Lions
Detroit is 4-2 and third in the division. Minnesota is 6-0 and Chicago is 5-2, so a home win on Sunday would trim the gap to one game and put the Lions back in the conversation.
The personal numbers are just as close. Gibbs has 5,919 scrimmage yards and 58 touchdowns since Detroit drafted him in 2023. Terrell Davis and LaDainian Tomlinson both reached 6,000 yards and 60 touchdowns within four seasons. Gibbs is only six games into his fourth.
Then comes the pace. He has 890 scrimmage yards this season, which projects to 2,522 across 17 games. Chris Johnson holds the record at 2,509, set in 2009. Gibbs would need to average about 148 yards a game to finish above it, and he is at roughly 148 right now.
