DICE and Respawn might be joining forces on Star Wars Battlefront 3

Translate

After last week’s rumours that were circulating online about Star Wars Battlefront 3, even more reports have come out about the franchise’s future.

This speculation originally came from the rebooted final issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, which claimed that both DICE and Bungie were interested in the title.

Well, it appears that Bungie – the developer behind the legendary Halo franchise – will not be taking on this third instalment, but instead Respawn is said to be looking to team up with DICE.

In a report by Variety, multiple industry sources have confirmed that EA told its staff the two studios are working on "a future project" – that project is apparently Star Wars Battlefront 3.

The choice to make two developers collaborate on the title is largely due to EA’s layoffs and restructuring that have slashed around 400 jobs across the company.

But if these claims prove true, Respawn as a studio makes way more sense over Bungie, as Respawn has a direct history with Star Wars games, – namely, Star Wars Zero Company, which came out this year to largely critical acclaim.

And with DICE being the developer on the previous title, Star Wars Battlefront 2, this line-up of studios all adds up for what is a highly anticipated game.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 was released in 2017, but saw its final update in 2020. Despite this, the game has experienced huge spikes in active players driven by a community push for Star Wars Battlefront 3.

According to Kyber, the modding platform for the game, at its peak Star Wars Battlefront 2 had more than 122,000 active players across all platforms during a resurgence event.

But if the game is in the works, hopefully DICE has learnt its lesson about microtransactions after Star Wars Battlefront 2’s own intense microtransactions were met with mass criticism.

Whatever the case, at least it’s becoming increasingly likely we’ll see Star Wars Battlefront 3 in the future.
