Fire razes 194 stalls in Iligan City central market

ILIGAN CITY — A three-hour fire destroyed some 150 stalls at the central market in Zone 10 Poblacion here before dawn on Sunday, officials said.

Fire Officer 1 Renzie B. Reuyan, fire and arson investigator at the Bureau of Fire Protection Central Fire Station here, told the Inquirer in an interview that the conflagration reached the third alarm and was doused through the collective efforts of eight fire trucks.

The fire broke out at 2 a.m. and was contained at 5:20 a.m.

Investigators are looking at faulty electrical wiring as the possible cause of the fire, which started at the stall of Eddie Manza.

The damage was estimated at P900,000.

No casualties were reported.

Agnes Clerigo Maingat, Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office (EEDMO) chief, said the central market building houses a total of 884 stalls.

She added that the department recorded 149 stalls damaged by the fire, lower than the 167 totally destroyed listed by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), hence the need to reconcile the records.

Mayor Frederick Wee Siao directed the CSWDO to extend immediate assistance to stall renters affected by the fire. /mcm
