Southwest monsoon to bring rain over Luzon on Aug. 24

MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, will continue to bring rain over Luzon on Monday while three weather systems are being monitored outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Batanes will have the highest chance of monsoon rains.

Chances of heavy rain are likewise high in Ilocos Region, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal and Occidental Mindoro.

“The rest of Luzon continues to be affected by the southwest monsoon, though only isolated rain showers are expected,” Pagasa weather specialist Charmagne Varilla said in Filipino.

The rest of the country, particularly the Visayas and Mindanao, will experience hot and humid weather, with chances of isolated rain.

3 weather systems, stronger monsoon

Meanwhile, three weather systems are being monitored outside PAR, including Typhoon Saudel, which was last located 1,950 kilometers (km) east of Extreme Northern Luzon.

As of Sunday afternoon, Saudel was carrying maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 205 kph while moving northwestward at 30 kph.

It is expected to enter PAR on Monday morning or afternoon.

“It is also possible for it to intensify further and reach super typhoon category before entering PAR,” Varilla said.

Due to its distance, Saudel is forecast to remain far from the Philippine landmass and eventually exit PAR by Tuesday.

“So, from Wednesday through the weekend, expect a stronger southwest monsoon and a higher chance of rain,” Varilla said.

Pagasa is also monitoring two tropical depressions, one of which was located 1,265 km east of Southeastern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 70 kph while moving east-northeastward at 15 kph.

“Based on its observed movement, it might follow the path of Typhoon Saudel; therefore, the possibility of it entering PAR cannot be ruled out,” Varilla said.

Tropical Depression Gaeneri, formerly Neneng, meanwhile, was last located 520 km north of Itbayat, Batanes. While still being monitored by Pagasa, it no longer has any direct effects on the country.
