Pagasa: 3 weather disturbances being monitored outside PAR

MANILA, Philippines — Three weather disturbances are being monitored outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), with one forecast to enter by Monday, Aug. 24, the state weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported in its 5 p.m. weather advisory on Friday that Severe Tropical Storm Saudel is moving northwestward and may pass through the Philippine sea on Monday.

Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja maintained that Saudel has a low chance of making landfall, but it is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, or habagat, bringing renewed rains over the western sections of the country.
“It could still enhance the southwest monsoon, potentially bringing back occasional heavy rains to Luzon and Western Visayas, including Metro Manila,” he said.
Meanwhile, a low-pressure area (LPA), formerly “Neneng,” was located 720 km north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes and was not expected to directly affect the country.
A second LPA, estimated 1,440 km east of Northeastern Mindanao, has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression over the weekend. However, Estareja said the weather disturbance is likely to dissipate before it enters the PAR.

Estareja said rains are being experienced over Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and Davao Region due to the trough of the LPA.
“Rain is occurring in parts of Mindanao — specifically in Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and the Davao Region — for the first time; this is due to the trough of the low-pressure area located east of Mindanao,” he reported.

The southwest monsoon, on the other hand, persists to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Ilocos Region, Apayao, Abra, Benguet, Batanes, and Cagayan. /das
