Reacher's Main Character Has Changed In Prime Video's Fourth Season

Jack Reacher is not a man who embraces change readily. He knows what he likes, and he likes what he knows, giving a wide berth to cellphones, driving, mortgages, social niceties, and long-term relationships.

Across Reacher's four seasons on Prime Video, it has been suggested to him that slight lifestyle adjustments could prove beneficial. Neagley pleaded with Reacher to keep in touch with the Special Investigators. He hasn't. Roscoe gave Reacher her phone number in the hope that he'd call her. He didn't. The sharp glares Reacher gets when he speaks to grieving relatives with all the tact of a cement mixer say, "Please, leave the talking to us next time." He doesn't.

Truthfully, Reacher's aversion to change is a major part of the character's appeal, both in live-action, and in Lee Child's original books. Jack Reacher is an immovable object, unswayed by time, culture, or fashion. He's a stubborn rock, immune to anything other than the cold, hard rules of deduction and logic. In an unpredictable world, Reacher is a reassuringly constant presence, like a human Big Mac.

Surprisingly, Alan Ritchson's Reacher actually does change in season 4. It's certainly subtle, but Prime Video looks set to carry at least some of that evolution into the upcoming Reacher season 5.

Reacher Has Shown Way More Humility In Season 4

When you're the living, breathing hybrid between Sherlock Holmes and a shark, there isn't room to be humble. Jack Reacher has, admittedly, justified his arrogant edge over the past four seasons by taking down small armies, busting crimes the authorities couldn't, and solving complex cases with nothing but his gut and a toothbrush.

Because if there's one thing Reacher values as much as dental hygiene, it's fairness. When the big man makes a mistake, he isn't afraid to hold up those pan-sized hands and accept responsibility. It's just that season 4 has found him in that position more than he's accustomed to.

Reacher clocked his first major error after deducing why Anna Merrick was really riding the subway. The devastated mother was gunning for revenge against Lila and Amisha, unable to trust the authorities due to the government's own involvement in the conspiracy. Faced with Anna, distraught and armed, Reacher made a judgment call to falsely identify himself as an off-duty police officer, after which Anna took her own life. If Anna hadn't believed she was about to be seized by corrupt cops, she may not have pulled the trigger, and this weighs heavily on Reacher's mind throughout season 4.

Reacher's second major mistake came when he hopped into bed with Lila, hearing the words "investigative journalist" when she really meant "international terrorist." Usually so perceptive, Reacher missed many clues that Lila wasn't who she claimed to be, and even caught her using a false identity before their short affair began. Still, Reacher remained enamored by Lila, happily sharing every piece of information his team uncovered.

Tamara finally addresses the Lila situation in Reacher season 4, episode 6, accusing her burly partner of "sleeping with the enemy." Reacher reluctantly admits Lila was manipulating him from the start, and makes clear that he doesn't intend to let that transgression slide. Still, it's rare that the biggest liability in Jack Reacher's team is Reacher himself.

Reacher Actually Accepts Death In Episode 6

The biggest shift in Jack Reacher's personality comes at the very end of season 4's sixth episode. Captured by mercenaries, tied up in a van, and driven somewhere nice and quiet, fans would expect Reacher to start looking for a weak point in the vehicle's chassis. Perhaps he and Tamara could cook up a ruse to make the mercs drop their guard for one crucial moment. Maybe Reacher could spend the rest of the journey figuring out how to kill his enemies with their own shoes.

In a huge surprise, Reacher season 4, episode 6 ends with the titular character accepting death. He tells Tamara they're both about to be killed in under 30 minutes, stating it as an empirical fact rather than a warning. There's no "unless we..." here - Reacher straight-up admits he's going to die.

Doubling down on that gloomy forecast, Reacher decides to use his final minutes not plotting an escape, but putting Tamara at peace with her own demise. Reacher's speech about "dying properly" is touching, but far removed from the character viewers know. Reacher has faced dire circumstances before, and might have previously prepared for the worst only when a gun was pointed directly at his head, but this is a situation where Reacher has a 30-minute journey to figure out a plan. Instead he decides to accept his days of wandering the United States are over.

What Reacher's Character Change Means For Season 5 & Beyond

Given that Prime Video's Reacher rarely maintains a serious degree of continuity, it remains to be seen whether season 4's personality changes will mean anything going forward. Will Reacher be less trusting with love interests from now on? Will he be more delicate when dealing with distressed strangers on the subway? Will he drop that air of invulnerability and act like someone who knows life can be here today, but gone tomorrow?

The only consequence with any real chance of lasting into next season is Reacher developing distrust toward love interests.

Every season of Reacher shares the recurring theme of Alan Ritchson's character gradually softening as each case progresses, his teammates slowly seeing a well-hidden cuddly side emerge. If Reacher started season 5 with a more empathetic mindset from the jump, the show would lose a vital ingredient.

Similarly, Jack Reacher wouldn't be the character we know and love if he started worrying about death during every confrontation.

It is, however, possible that we'll see Reacher season 5's female lead get the cold shoulder from Ritchson's character, perhaps with Reacher mentioning a past incident where being attracted to a woman caused him to make mistakes in an investigation. Watching Reacher learn to love again would put a fresh spin on Reacher season 5's almost-inevitable romance angle, with the hero desperately trying to keep his professional and personal lives separate before eventually giving in and freeing himself from the guilt of being tricked by Lila.
