Fallout 4 is already an immensely expansive game with a runtime that'll make even the most hardened of RPG players blush. Add to that the plethora of available mods that drastically increase the number of available activities for you to partake in, and you're looking at an MMO-sized experience. That is, of course, a good thing, both as it gives prospective purchasers plenty of bang for their buck and ensures those who enjoy the base experience can continue to immerse themselves within the wasteland.
However, inevitably, fans will run out of new things to do, and there are only so many playthroughs of Fallout 4 one can take before the formerly charming flaws start to crawl through the cracks. Fortunately, in preparation for the upcoming Fallout 5, a brand-new release for Fallout 4 titled Detour has been released, one that not only greatly expands on the available content on offer, but practically adds an entire new game into the legendary apocalyptic RPG.
It is understandable that many are turning to Fallout 4, both in the wake of the excellent second season of the Fallout TV show and in anticipation of each and every new Fallout 5 update. However, as aforementioned, players have either exhausted all the available content or simply do not know where to look for new quests and expansions. Fortunately, you can, at least for a handful of hours, stop with just the recently released Detour, an expansion-sized mod from creator Pig.
Adding a wealth of new NPCs, quests, items, and a brand-new town, the titular Detour, this mod isn't merely a new storyline for players to pursue (although that is included), but a living and breathing town that fleshes out Fallout 4's densely packed world. Fallout 4: Detour adds over 600 lines of dialogue voiced by professional voice actors, new activities to partake in, quests to complete, vendors to shop at, and even a house to buy and live in. It's a sizable and transformative update that feels as if it'll be a must-have in every playthrough.
Mods like Detour are what make Fallout 4 and its talented community so incredible, as they're both additive and transformative. If you're interested in trying out Detour, you can do so by downloading it via its official Nexus Mods page. To actually start the quest in-game and gain access to Detour, players will need to head to the overpass near Bedford Station and talk to the guard at the door of the elevator. While this isn't a mod on the same scale as Fallout 4's best total conversion mods, it's still a sizable experience well worth downloading.
It's also worth noting that Detour comes with an in-built reputation mechanic that makes the way one interacts with characters within the town meaningful. Your choices have consequences in the town of Detour, so you'll need to be careful how you treat each of its denizens. Ultimately, Detour is another massive mod for one of Bethesda's best games, an experience that will elevate your Fallout 4 experience and offer you a whole new set of quests to busy yourself with as you continue to endure the long wait before Fallout 5's release date.
