- German energy firm PreussenElektra GmbH is working with US chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA) to assess whether former nuclear plant sites could be turned into data centers, the firm said on Wednesday, without giving further details.
- The E.ON Group is exploring new options for the future use of its former nuclear power station sites. The focus of these exploratory discussions is on high-performance data centres for AI software.
- The aim is to assess the existing energy and site infrastructure, as well as the available land, according to the technical and operational requirements of high-performance AI data centers.
- The assessment is open-ended. It represents an initial step in evaluating the technical, infrastructural, economic, and regulatory requirements for potential projects.
- No specific investment or site decisions are currently associated with it, the companies said.
- PreussenElektra is responsible for the decommissioning and dismantling of eight nuclear power plants in Germany. As dismantling progresses, the company is gradually creating the conditions for viable reuse concepts and the long-term development of the sites.
