Sergio Garcia focused on '27 Ryder Cup; LIV 2.0 still possibility

AUSTIN, (Texas): Sergio Garcia said he has not ruled out future involvement with LIV 2.0, but his focus is squarely on qualifying for the European Ryder Cup team that will compete at Adare Manor in Ireland next year.

Garcia was granted a release from his LIV Golf contract as part of the league's bankruptcy process. What lies ahead remains to be seen.

The Spaniard is competing in his national open in Madrid this week and has stated an intention to play on the DP World Tour.

Garcia, 46, also mentioned the possibility of returning to the PGA Tour and competing on the Champions Tour in the future. And the door is not fully closed on LIV.

"I think everything is an option," Garcia said, as translated from Spanish by Bunkered.uk.

"That doesn't mean I won't go or that I'll definitely stay with LIV, but settling the LIV 1.0 matter now avoids potential repercussions related to that contract.

"I don't really know how things will end up with the DP World Tour regarding LIV 2.0, we'll have to see, (but) I want to try and give myself the best chance of making that (Ryder Cup) team."

Garcia said his focus is qualifying as a player, but he has told captain Luke Donald that he would like to be involved in any capacity should he not qualify.

"Everyone knows how much I love the Ryder Cup and the possibility of playing in another one, or if not, finding some way to help in another way, as vice- captain or something like that could be something very interesting," Garcia said.

"I told (Donald) that I'm going to do everything possible to see if I can get into that team and I also told him that if I don't get into that team, I'll help in any way I can."

Garcia was one of the first wave of players to sign with LIV in 2022 and resigned his DP World Tour membership.

He rejoined last year but did not renew for 2026 after failing to qualify for the 2025 Ryder Cup team.

Currently No. 141 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Garcia had only four top-10 LIV Golf finishes this year.

He finished 52nd at the Masters in his only start in a 2026 major.

That has him evaluating his options for 2027 and beyond.

Patrick Reed, who chose not to re-sign with LIV this year, currently leads the Race to Dubai standings as he closes in on regaining his PGA Tour card.

He's ahead of Rory McIlroy and Eugenio Chacarra, who left LIV Golf last year after not being retained by Garcia's Fireballs GC team.

Henrik Stenson, who was relegated from LIV last November, made his Champions Tour debut in August.

"It's definitely a possibility. I turn 47 in January, and the Champions Tour is a possibility," Garcia said.

"I'd like the chance to play some of those tournaments, especially the big ones on the Champions Tour. These are things that I'm starting to consider at my age." — REUTERS
