Halal certification mandate to boost product competitiveness: Minister

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Industry Minister Muhammad Sarmuji said the mandatory halal certification requirement, set to take effect in October 2026, presents a strategic opportunity to improve the quality and competitiveness of Indonesian industrial products.

"The halal industry has enormous potential, making industry players' readiness to meet halal standards crucial to strengthening Indonesia's position in domestic and global markets," Sarmuji said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said strengthening the halal industry ecosystem was part of broader efforts to reinforce the national industrial structure and support the transformation toward a resilient, competitive, and sustainable industrial sector.

Therefore, the ministry is focusing not only on regulatory matters but also on improving support services to help businesses comply with applicable quality standards and regulations effectively and efficiently.

One key initiative is to optimize the role of the ministry's technical implementation units across various regions in providing industrial services, including guidance and facilitation to help businesses meet halal certification requirements.

Head of the Ministry of Industry's Agency for Industrial Standardization and Services Policy (BSKJI), Emmy Suryandari, said businesses should view the mandatory halal certification policy, which is set to take effect on October 18, as a strategic opportunity to increase product value and expand market access.

"Halal certification is no longer merely an administrative requirement, it is also a catalyst for enhancing the competitiveness and advancing the development of our industry," Emmy said.

She added that halal certification was expected to make Indonesian products more competitive and resilient in both domestic and global markets.

Emmy said the ministry's technical implementation units provide a range of services, from technical guidance and hands-on assistance to helping businesses prepare for the certification process through Halal Inspection Bodies (LPH), in collaboration with the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH).
