BNPB builds temporary housing for NTT's 7.7 quake survivors

The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (BNPB) has confirmed the phased construction of temporary housing for survivors of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in mid-August 2026.

"BNPB is building temporary homes in stages based on beneficiary data provided by regional governments," Head of the BNPB Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Berton Panjaitan said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to Panjaitan, the initiative aims to enable survivors in seven districts across Flores Island to leave evacuation shelters and move into temporary housing while awaiting the reconstruction of their permanent homes.

The government is offering residents whose homes were severely damaged two options during the recovery period, he added, noting they can either receive cash assistance to rent accommodation or relocate to temporary housing units.

He reported that most affected residents had opted to receive assistance in the form of temporary housing.

A total of 1,494 houses were verified as severely damaged in Manggarai District. As of Sept. 28, the government had completed four temporary housing units, while construction of 50 units had surpassed the 50-percent mark and another 60 units remain below 50-percent completion.

In East Manggarai District, at least six temporary housing units have been completed, while construction of another 561 is underway, out of a first-phase target of 1,305 units.

Meanwhile, 11 temporary housing units have been completed in Ngada District, with another 272 units under construction.

Out of 314 verified severely damaged homes in Nagekeo District, the government has completed nine temporary housing units and is working on another 173.

Sikka District has recorded two completed units, with another 25 under construction.

Additionally, seven units have been completed in Ende District, and another seven are being built.

Meanwhile, in West Manggarai District, the local government is still finalizing the decree listing beneficiaries by name and address following a change in residents' decisions from the housing waiting fund option to the temporary housing aid.

Panjaitan emphasized that construction sites are being determined through consultations with affected residents, while local administrations are finalizing post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction plans.
