Abia announces dates for tertiary education sports fiesta

The Central Organising Committee, Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta (ASTESF) 2026, has said that the sports fiesta will be held from 3 November to 6 November at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Emeka Enyiazu, the chairman of the central organising committee, announced this in a statement on 1 September.

Mr Enyiazu said the announcement of the dates followed a successful meeting of the enlarged Central Organising Committee and the Directors of Sports of participating institutions, as well as the Central Organising Committee of the ASTESF 2026.

“The 2026 edition is expected to bring together tertiary institutions owned and operated by the Federal Government, the Abia State Government, and private proprietors, creating a unique platform for students and young athletes from across the State to compete, connect, showcase their talents, and celebrate the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence,” the statement said.

“The Fiesta is conceived as more than a sporting competition. It is a platform for talent discovery, youth development, institutional friendship and healthy competition, providing an avenue through which the enormous sporting potential of students at Abia’s tertiary institutions can be identified, nurtured and linked to greater opportunities.”

ABIA TERTIARY EDUCATION SPORTS FIESTA 2026: The Central Organising Committee ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER 3–6 FOR A FIVE-DAY CELEBRATION OF TALENT, UNITY AND SPORTING EXCELLENCE

Umuahia, Abia State, 1st September 2026

At the end of the meeting of the enlarged Central Organising Committee and the Directors of Sports of participating institutions, the Central Organising Committee (COC) of the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta (ASTESF) 2026 announced November 3–6, 2026, as the official dates for the much-anticipated four-day sporting fiesta.

The 2026 edition is expected to bring together tertiary institutions owned and operated by the Federal Government, the Abia State Government, and private proprietors, creating a unique platform for students and young athletes from across the State to compete, connect, showcase their talents, and celebrate the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence.

The Fiesta is conceived as more than a sporting competition. It is a platform for talent discovery, youth development, institutional friendship and healthy competition, providing an avenue through which the enormous sporting potential of students at Abia’s tertiary institutions can be identified, nurtured and linked to greater opportunities.

The Chairman of the Central Organising Committee, Dr Emeka Enyiazu, described ASTESF 2026 as an important milestone in the development of tertiary institution sports in Abia State.

“ASTESF 2026 is about bringing our tertiary institutions together through the unifying power of sport. Whether an institution is federal, state-owned or privately owned, our students share the same aspirations, energy and sporting potential. This Fiesta provides them with a common platform to compete, build friendships and demonstrate what young people can achieve when talent meets opportunity.”

The COC is working to deliver an event that meets high standards of organisation, fairness, safety, professionalism and sportsmanship, with preparations underway across the areas required for a successful sporting fiesta.

The various committees of the Local Organising structure are already being mobilised to address the technical, medical and health, media and publicity, mobilisation and sensitisation, marketing, logistics, security, protocol, welfare, ceremonies, and other critical aspects of the event.

Attention is being given to ensuring that participating institutions receive adequate information and support to prepare their athletes and officials for the competition.

ASTESF 2026 will provide an opportunity to move tertiary institution sports beyond competition towards talent identification and development, because today’s student-athletes could become tomorrow’s elite sportsmen and women representing Abia and Nigeria at national and international competitions.

We therefore call on the leadership of Federal, State and private tertiary institutions in Abia State to embrace the Fiesta and encourage their students and athletes to participate actively. We want every participating institution to see ASTESF not merely as a competition to be won, but as an investment in the development of our young people. There will be winners, and there will be those who do not win medals, but every student who participates should leave the Fiesta better—in confidence, discipline, friendship, experience and exposure.

The COC also invites corporate organisations, businesses, sports development partners, alumni associations, media organisations, communities, and other stakeholders to partner with and support the Fiesta.

The Committee believes that broad stakeholder participation will help establish a sustainable platform for the development of sport within Abia’s tertiary education system.

We assured all participating institutions that the COC is committed to conducting the Fiesta in an atmosphere of fair play, transparency, inclusiveness, discipline and mutual respect, and that the safety and welfare of athletes and officials remain paramount.

Further details on participating institutions, registration, sporting events, venues, accreditation, competition schedules, and other arrangements will be communicated via the Fiesta’s official channels as preparations progress.
