Liberal candidate's husband allegedly assaulted over campaign sign

Translate

The husband of a Victorian Liberal Party candidate has allegedly been assaulted during a confrontation over election signs.

The party said the husband of Amanda Dow — the candidate for the seat of Yan Yean in Melbourne's outer north — was involved in an incident in Mernda on Sunday afternoon.

"We understand Ms Dow's husband approached a member of the public who was removing Liberal Party campaign signage and was allegedly assaulted," it said in a statement.

"He suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital and was discharged today."

Police said a 59-year-old Mernda man was charged with recklessly causing injury, criminal damage and unlawful assault over an incident near Abundant Avenue and Bridge Inn Road at about 2pm.

"Police have been told the victim attended an address to retrieve political campaign signage when he was assaulted," a spokesperson said.

The accused has been released on bail to appear before Heidelberg Magistrates' Court on February 1.

The Liberal Party said it could not make any further comment on the matter.

"We ask that the privacy of Ms Dow and her husband be respected while he recovers," it said.
