Cooperatives urged to be more than goods distributors: Bappenas

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas) asked cooperatives to develop businesses in the production sector so they do not act only as distributors, but can also create added value for regional economies.

Bappenas Director for Cooperatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Mahatmi Parwitasari Saronto said in a statement here on Saturday that cooperative business development needs to match each region’s economic potential, so it can help drive local economies.

“We encourage cooperatives to develop businesses based on the potential in their regions,” Saronto said.

Saronto made this statement while reviewing the 2026 Cooperative Business Incubation Program run by the Cooperative Revolving Fund Management Agency (LPDB Koperasi) with the Ikopin Business and Entrepreneurship Incubator Center (PIBI).

According to her, the assistance program needs to be evaluated based on its impact on business growth and on cooperatives’ turnover.

The program, which began in May 2026, involves 16 cooperatives in Bandung and Sumedang districts, consisting of 14 Red and White Village Cooperatives (KDMP) and two regular cooperatives.

LPDB Koperasi recorded that of that number, 12 cooperatives operate in trade and staple goods, three in agriculture and agribusiness, and one in livestock.

Monitoring as of October 18, 2026 showed that the 16 cooperatives’ average performance indicator achievement, or objective and key results (OKR), rose to 84.81 percent from 78.94 percent in September.

LPDB Koperasi General and Legal Director Deva Rachman said the incubation program is directed at strengthening cooperatives’ governance and independence so they have sustainable businesses and are ready to access financing.

According to Rachman, the incubation program must be able to capture each cooperative’s local potential.

“We want cooperatives not only to receive assistance, but to truly grow, with running businesses, good governance, and be ready to access financing to upgrade their businesses,” Rachman said.
