Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia welcomed 12.01 million foreign tourist arrivals from January to September 2026, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), with average spending per visit also increasing.

"This figure represents an increase of 5.01 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2025," BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that foreign tourist arrivals reached 1.43 million in September alone, declining 10.79 percent from August but increasing 2.31 percent from the same month a year earlier.

By nationality, Malaysian visitors accounted for the largest share of arrivals in September at 16.76 percent, followed by Australians at 12.43 percent and Chinese nationals at 10.76 percent.

He also said that, on a year-on-year basis, Indonesia recorded increases in arrivals from Australia and China, while the number of visitors from Malaysia declined during the period.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali remained the main gateway for foreign tourists, he added, with Australian visitors accounting for the largest share of arrivals through the facility.

Hartono also pointed to an increase in average spending per visit by foreign tourists.

He said the figure climbed from US$1,285 in the second quarter to more than US$1,374 in the following quarter, exceeding the level recorded in the same period a year earlier.

BPS also reported an increase in the average length of stay, which rose to 11.01 nights in the third quarter from 10.30 nights in the previous quarter, he added.

By expenditure category, foreign tourists spent the most on accommodation, averaging US$497.12 per visit, followed by US$271.33 on food and beverages and US$148.93 on souvenirs, he said.

He also highlighted a rise in spending across nearly all expenditure categories, led by accommodation and food and beverages.

Leisure remained the primary purpose of travel among foreign visitors in the third quarter, accounting for 79 percent of arrivals. Meanwhile, 12.69 percent visited for personal reasons and 8.31 percent for business purposes.
