Indonesia faces tough road to full badminton quota at 2028 LA Olympics

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has begun mapping out its program for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, aiming to secure full quotas across all badminton events.

PBSI's Head of Development and Achievement, Eng Hian, said the entire program would be aligned with the Olympic qualification period, which begins in early May 2027.

"Our goal is to secure full Olympic quotas through the 2028 Olympic qualification process. But of course, this will not be an easy task for us," he said on Wednesday.

The association must map out, assess, and adjust its entire program while planning the Olympic qualification pathway, which begins on May 1, 2027, with the goal of securing full Olympic quotas by April 1, 2028, he continued.

Hian explained that a full badminton quota for the 2028 Olympics would allow a country to send up to 16 athletes, comprising eight men and eight women, across five events: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.

To qualify two athletes in the singles events, both players must be ranked in the top 16 of the Olympic Rankings. In doubles, two pairs from the same country must be ranked in the top eight to secure two quotas.

This target aligns with PBSI's long-term program, as outlined by PBSI Chairman Fadil Imran, who said that all sectors would be prepared to compete for tickets to Los Angeles.

"We are preparing everything according to the long-term program to secure full quotas in all sectors. We will monitor the progress because the competition across all sectors is very tight," he said.

Hian acknowledged that securing full quotas would be challenging, requiring PBSI to continually assess its strengths, evaluate its programs, and adjust its strategies to meet the needs of each discipline.

Achieving two gold medals, one silver medal, and three bronze medals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games would be a key step toward qualifying for the 2028 Olympics, he said.

Hian then emphasized that the Olympics remain the top priority for the current PBSI leadership.

"It is certainly a major responsibility. However, if athletes, coaches, and officials share the responsibility, we can overcome the challenges and find solutions collectively," he said.
