Prabowo calls for Jakarta to become a green city

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has called for Jakarta to become a green city by expanding public open spaces, creating urban parks and installing vertical gardens on high-rise buildings.

"If possible, let's start with Jakarta; Jakarta must become the green city, the garden city," Prabowo said during the inauguration of the Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) Kelapa Gading-Manggarai route on Wednesday.

The President outlined the initiative as the central government prepares to officially launch the Indonesia Asri movement.

The program aims to create environments that are safe, healthy, clean and beautiful, reflected in the acronym ASRI—Aman (Safe), Sehat (Healthy), Resik (Clean) and Indah (Beautiful).

Following the Jakarta LRT launch, Prabowo said he would convene a national coordination meeting within the next one to two weeks with governors, regents and Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) members from across Indonesia.

He stressed that environmental revitalization must not be limited to Jakarta but expanded to all provincial and regency capitals across the country.

"If possible, all large buildings should feature vertical gardens," Prabowo said, adding that local governments could help building owners facing difficulties implementing vertical greening measures.

Prabowo also stressed the need to manage waste and clean rivers and waterways using technology as part of a broader national transformation.

"We must transform Jakarta—and eventually all provincial and regency capitals. Indonesia must undergo a transformation. Eliminate waste, clean up rivers using technology," he said.

At the event, Prabowo also backed the Jakarta provincial government's efforts to expand public recreational spaces, including urban parks and running tracks.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung earlier said city authorities had begun cleaning major waterways while preparing to develop additional green public spaces across the capital.
