The year is almost over, and somehow we’ve already made it through Halloween and are heading straight into the Thanksgiving and holiday season. Between decorating, planning family gatherings, and figuring out how we’re going to survive the final stretch of the year, there’s certainly plenty keeping us busy. But no matter how busy things get, there’s always time to squeeze in a little anime.
November is a slightly quieter month for anime premieres, as most of the fall season’s biggest releases have already gotten underway, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing worth checking out. Netflix is bringing us a couple of interesting new animated releases, including the long-awaited adaptation of Fool Night and the genre-bending Bass X Machina. Meanwhile, Crunchyroll keeps delivering new episodes of familiar favorites, with The Apothecary Diaries and Black Clover moving their stories forward. Whether you’re looking for a completely new series to get invested in or just want to keep up with the shows you’ve been following since October, November has plenty to offer in the anime department.
‘Fool Night’
Release Date: November 26 | Studio: Sunrise and SHAFT | Streamer: Netflix
Cast: Koki Uchiyama, Minako Kotobuki, Junya Enoki, Aya Endou.
What would you do if you had the option to give up your humanity in exchange for a better life? Fool Night is the highly anticipated upcoming anime adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda’s manga. Set in a world where thick clouds have blocked out the sun for an entire century, humanity is struggling to survive. With most vegetation dead and oxygen becoming increasingly scarce, scientists have developed a process known as Transfloration, which turns people nearing the end of their lives into plants that can produce oxygen. Those who undergo the procedure become known as Spiriflor.
The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man barely making ends meet while trying to support his sick mother. With mounting expenses and very few options left, he begins considering Transfloration as a way to escape his miserable circumstances. But giving up his human body comes with a pretty high cost.
‘Bass X Machina’
Release Date: November 3 | Studio: Studio Mir | Streamer: Netflix
Cast: Joy Ofodu, Cree Summer, Currie Graham.
Technically, Bass X Machina isn’t a traditional anime, but we’re making room for it anyway. This upcoming adult animated series comes from South Korea’s Studio Mir, the acclaimed and fan-favorite animation studio behind titles like The Legend of Korra. After several delays, the project is finally making its way to Netflix, bringing a combination of Western action, steampunk aesthetics, and supernatural elements.
At the center of the story is a father who finds himself pushed to increasingly extreme measures when protecting his family means taking justice into his own hands. This incredible anime debuts on November 3 and promises a unique take on the ever-popular Western genre. It also has an incredible voice cast led by Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry.
‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Season 3
New Episodes: 6–9
Release Date: October 2 | Studio: TOHO Studio | Streamer: Crunchyroll
Cast: Aoi Yuuki, Takeo Otsuka, Katsuyuki Konishi
One of the best mysteries in anime right now, The Apothecary Diaries continues its third season in November, giving Maomao plenty to investigate. If you’ve been keeping up since October, you’ll know that Maomao is now out of the rear palace and living her life as the apothecary of the pleasure district, but that hasn’t exactly made her life any less complicated. Between strange illnesses and rumors that seem too unusual to ignore, she once again finds herself caught up in the middle of something far bigger than it initially lets on.
Meanwhile, Jinshi is adjusting to his new responsibilities as the Imperial Brother. His position comes with its own set of complications, particularly as rumors surrounding an immortal maiden and an approaching famine begin spreading throughout Li. And of course, the slow-burn romance between these two leads keeps on sizzling, giving fans small glimpses of their developing relationship.
‘Black Clover’ Season 2
New Episodes: 6–9
Release Date: October 3 | Studio: Studio Pierrot | Streamer: Crunchyroll
Cast: Gakuto Kajiwara, Kana Yuuki, Nobunaga Shimazaki.
Asta and Yuno are two childhood friends who grew up together with the shared dream of becoming the Wizard King. While Yuno was naturally gifted with magic, Asta was born without any magical abilities whatsoever. Rather than accept that his dream was impossible, Asta dedicated himself to physical training and eventually discovered a mysterious power of his own through a rare five-leaf Grimoire.
In Season 2, Black Clover is not only breaking streaming charts left and right, but also moving into another major chapter as the Clover Kingdom faces one of its greatest threats yet. With the Dark Triad wreaking havoc across the region, Asta and the Magic Knights are preparing for a dangerous mission into the Spade Kingdom. Their goal is to rescue their captured squad captains, but getting them back won’t be easy. As the Magic Knights prepare to face enemies unlike anything they’ve encountered before, Asta will have to push himself beyond his limits once again. The second season continues throughout November with four new episodes arriving on Crunchyroll every Saturday.
‘Aoashi’ Season 2
New Episodes: 6–9
Release Date: October 4 | Studio: Production I.G | Streamer: Crunchyroll
Cast: Kouki Oosuzu, Chikahiro Kobayashi.
Aoi Ashito has finally earned his place on the A team, but making it this far is only the beginning of his journey. After spending so much time trying to prove himself, Ashito is now surrounded by some of the most talented young soccer players in Japan, and he quickly discovers that being part of an elite team means there’s very little room for mistakes.
As the second season continues, Ashito is adjusting to the demands of the U-18 Premier League. The competition is considerably tougher than anything he’s experienced before, and his teammates have years of experience and training that he still needs to catch up on. Even during practice, his weaknesses become increasingly apparent, forcing him to rethink the way he approaches the game. With four more episodes arriving throughout November, Aoashi continues exploring what it takes to grow from a promising young athlete into a truly competitive player.
‘Blue Box’ Season 2
New Episodes: 5–9
Release Date: October 4 | Studio: Telecom Animation Film | Streamer: Netflix
Cast: Shouya Chiba, Reina Ueda, Akari Kitou, Kengo Haryuu
Blue Box follows Taiki Inomata, a badminton player who spends much of his time training at school and admiring Chinatsu Kano, a talented basketball player who seems completely out of his league. She’s older, more popular, and already making a name for herself on the court, while Taiki is still working toward becoming a better athlete. Suddenly, his quiet crush becomes a lot harder to ignore when Chinatsu suddenly must move into Taiki’s home due to her family moving abroad.
Season 2 continues exploring the relationship between the two as they navigate their increasingly complicated feelings, but also, a fractured friendship from the past and some seriously tough competition threaten to complicate their personal lives and their respective journeys toward their individual goals as athletes. Simply put, Blue Box is a perfect mix of sports drama and romance, providing the perfect cozy vibes for the season.
‘Ranma ½’ Season 3
New Episodes: 5–9
Release Date: October 3 | Studio: MAPPA | Streamer: Netflix
Cast: Kappei Yamaguchi, Noriko Hidaka.
Based on Rumiko Takahashi’s beloved manga, Ranma 1/2 brings the original anime’s ridiculous martial arts battles, over-the-top characters, and romantic chaos back to the screen with a fresh, vibrant look. And as Season 3 continues, Ranma and Akane just keep getting into trouble. Since moving into the Tendou household, Ranma Saotome has had very little time to enjoy a normal life. He still transforms into a girl whenever he’s splashed with cold water, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing his martial arts training.
Ranma's relationship with Akane has also slowly changed, despite the two constantly arguing and refusing to admit how much they care about each other. Of course, their engagement has attracted plenty of unwanted attention. Shampoo is still determined to marry Ranma, while several guys who have fallen for Akane keep challenging him in increasingly ridiculous and hilarious ways.
