Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal, Bradley Whitford Prove Strong Ticket Draws – Broadway Box Office

A raft of recent arrivals are among the strongest performers on this week’s Broadway box office chart, with Other Desert Cities, A Few Good Men and Wanted filling venues, while some long-runners did well with performers of note bolstering sales.
Among the latter was Just In Time, with Jeremy Jordan playing his final shows last week (Matthew Morrison takes over the role of Bobby Darin starting tonight). For the week ending October 18, the bio-musical was a sell-out at Circle in the Square, grossing $1,035,757, a jump of $108,337 over the previous week.
Among the new arrivals, Other Desert Cities, the acclaimed Jon Robin Baitz revival starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ed Harris and Allison Janney, Lily Rabe and Joe Keery, was the top earner, selling out the Hudson and grossing $1,817,584. (That tally reflects a drop of $339,771 from the previous week due to heavily comped press previews and the October 18 opening night).
860, the new Billy Crystal solo show opening tomorrow night, filled 98% of the Imperial’s seats for seven previews last week, grossing $1,268,334 (also reflecting comped press nights), while A Few Good Men, the Aaron Sorkin revival starring Bradley Whitford, had seven previews at non-prof Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont, filling the house and grossing $1,246,301.
Also in previews were The Imaginary Invalid, non-prof Roundabout’s latest starring Bill Irwin at the Haimes, grossing $428,094 with attendance at 90% of capacity. Wanted, the new musical from Angelica Chéri and Ross Baum starring Solea Pfeiffer and Liisi LaFontaine, was a virtual sell-out for five previews at the James Earl Jones, grossing $451,014.
Other sell-outs for the week were Chicago, Hadestown, Hamilton, MJ and Oh, Mary! Coming close were & Juliet, Buena Vista Social Club, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Operation Mincemeat, Paranormal Activity, School Girls, or The African Mean Girls Play, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, The Outsiders, The Rocky Horror Show and Wicked.
Aladdin, with Sherry Shepherd joining the cast over the weekend as the Genie – her first full week of performances begins tonight – grossed $1,195,405, filling 92% of seats at the New Amserdam.
The Top 5 overall earners for the week were Hamilton ($2,777,340), The Lion King ($2,017,873), Other Desert Cities ($1,817,584), MJ ($1,760,514), Oh, Mary! ($1,533,627) and Wicked ($1,425,323).
Three productions carried average paid admissions in excess of $200: Hamilton ($258.86), Other Desert Cities ($233.26) and Oh, Mary! ($214.79). The overall average for Broadway’s 30 productions was $131.05.
As for top premium ticket prices, the starry Other Desert Cities tops the list at $799, a big $200 more than the usual front-runner Hamilton. Just In Time, with Jordan’s final performances, carried a top premium of $774.50.
On the other, lower end of the average ticket-price spectrum were non-prof, subscription-heavy Roundabout’s The Imaginary Invalid ($80.88), with Stranger Things: The First Shadow averaging $80.44, Wanted at $86.37 and School Girls with $88.87.
In all, the 30 productions grossed a total $33,963,816 for the week ending October 18, down about 4% from the previous week and 11% from last year at this time. Attendance was 259,164, up 4% from the previous week but down 7% year-to-year.
