Netflix Mystery Thriller’s Season 2 Fate Officially Confirmed Four Years After Renewal

He covers the latest in movie & TV news, with a focus on major franchises like Star Wars, The Boys, and Game of Thrones, and also writes some features and reviews. He wrote lists for ScreenRant from 2017-2022, became a news writer in 2023, a senior staff writer in 2024, and an editor in 2025.

Four years after being renewed, the fate of Netflix's The Watcher is confirmed.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series is centered on married couple Nora (Naomi Watts) and Dean Brannock (Bobby Cannavale), who move to a house in the suburbs, where they receive ominous letters signed by "the Watcher," who is stalking them. It was planned to be a miniseries, but was renewed for a second season in 2022. After four years, though, there has been uncertainty about whether the show will continue, especially after Watts shared with Entertainment Weekly in 2024 that she had not heard any updates.

Now, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brennan was asked if The Watcher season 2 is "next up" for him. He confirmed that it is, sharing that "Yes. I was just writing that." When asked about what he could tease, Brennan admitted, "Nothing. I’m being told absolutely nothing. It’s gonna be good, though." As for a timeframe of when season 2 will be released, he said, "I don’t know yet. Watch this space!"

While he doesn't share any story or release details, this update does confirm The Watcher season 2 is still happening, with it being actively written now. Since it is "next up" for Brennan, the show's return also appears to be taking priority over other future projects. Both of these developments affirm that this is a renewal that has not been abandoned and season 2 is moving forward.

That being said, with the sophomore season still being written, it definitely won't be coming out in 2026, and a 2027 debut seems highly unlikely. 2028 appears to be the earliest that show could feasibly return, which would be six years after season 1.

As for why it has taken this long for The Watcher season 2, beyond the challenge of expanding the story beyond the initial miniseries, Brennan and Murphy have been working on numerous seasons of Netflix's Monsters, which just released its fourth season, with this one focused on Lizzie Borden. There have been no shortage of other Ryan Murphy shows during the past four years as well, including All's Fair, Doctor Odyssey, American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, American Sports Story, and Feud season 2.

Much like the real-life case that the series was inspired by, The Watcher season 1 ends with a great deal left unresolved. Season 2 has the opportunity to directly answer those mysteries, with Watts and Cannavale reprising their respective roles as Nora and Dean, and other cast members potentially also returning. This could include Isabel Gravitt and Luke David Blumm as the couple's children, Ellie and Carter Brannock, along with the neighbors, featuring Mia Farrow as Pearl Winslow, Terry Kinney as Jasper Winslow, and Margo Martindale as Mo.

Given the format of Monsters and many of Murphy's other shows, another possibility is turning The Watcher into an anthology series, with a new group of characters being stalked by the titular figure. There is no confirmation of this route being taken, though, with more updates needed to form a clear picture of what season 2 will look like, and whether it will be a direct continuation with returning cast members and characters.
