"Hopefully We Will Get Him Back": Shubman Gill Gives Big Update On Hardik Pandya Ahead Of NZ ODIs

Translate

Ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand, India skipper Shubman Gill shared an update on all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who is currently recovering from injury at the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE). Widely regarded as one of India's premier all-rounders, Hardik has not played a competitive match since IPL 2026. His last appearance for India came in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup against New Zealand in March. Since then, recurring injury concerns have kept him out of action.

Hardik was close to making his comeback for the India A team during the series against Australia. However, a shin injury not only ruled him out of that assignment but also forced him to miss the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand.

Speaking about Hardik, Gill admitted that his absence has affected the team's balance. He highlighted the all-rounder's ability to bowl effectively with both the new and old ball, making him a vital asset to the side. Nevertheless, Gill expressed confidence that Hardik would return to action soon.

"Firstly, Hardik Pandya is a great all-rounder. Not many players in the world has his skill set. As a bowler, you can use him in the different facets of the game. He can bowl with the new ball and the old ball. We have had multiple conversations. He is unfortunate with his injuries. He hasn't played since the IPL. Hopefully, he will come back soon. He will play some domestic cricket. And hopefully we will get him back in the Indian team soon," said Gill during the pre-match press conference.

Gill further added that Hardik's comeback would strengthen India's lower middle order, with the all-rounder capable of providing stability and firepower at the No. 7 or No. 8 position.

"Whenever Hardik bhai comes back, no 7-8 will also be taken care of. Happy with batting group leading up to the ODI World Cup," he said.

India enter the ODI series after securing a 3-2 victory over New Zealand in the preceding five-match T20I series. The first ODI between the two sides will be played on Wednesday at Eden Park in Auckland.
