For six decades, the shinkansen built its reputation on speed, frequency and reliability. Now, the bullet train linking Japan’s two major population centers is leaning hard into luxury.
On Oct. 1, JR Central debuted its Supreme Class, a new fare above the Tokaido Shinkansen’s premium Green Class. Surpassing even the Gran Class on the Tohoku and Hokkaido lines, the Supreme Class offers private rooms for either individuals or pairs, plus a complimentary welcome drink and sweet, along with other beverages and snacks available for purchase to Supreme Class passengers only.
Available on select N700S trains along the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines that run between Tokyo and Hakata, Supreme Class introduces the first fully private cabins on the route since smaller, private cabins were discontinued on the Green Class 23 years ago.
