South Kalimantan's respiratory cases ease after haze spike: govt

Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Acute respiratory infection cases in Indonesia’s South Kalimantan Province began easing in the 33rd week after rising amid haze from forest and land fires, the provincial health office said.

Speaking here Wednesday, South Kalimantan Health Office Chief Diauddin said the decline was a positive development as authorities strengthen health protection and services for people affected by the haze.

“Cases previously averaged about 5,000, rising to around 7,000. But last week, in the 33rd week, they declined somewhat from the 32nd week,” Diauddin said.

He said the latest decline could mark the start of a sustained improvement, but urged residents to continue taking health precautions.

“Hopefully, the trend will continue downward, although cases remain high compared with before the haze,” he said.

The South Kalimantan Health Office and district and municipal health authorities are continuing to monitor acute respiratory infection cases.

Surveillance is being conducted to track trends and guide decisions on necessary responses, he said, adding that residents have also been urged to take greater precautions, particularly when air quality deteriorates because of haze.

Wearing masks outdoors is one measure that can reduce exposure to smoke and airborne particles.

“When air quality is poor, people should limit outdoor activities and wear masks. Anyone experiencing coughing, breathing difficulties or other symptoms should seek medical care,” Diauddin said.

The health office hopes greater public awareness of health protection will continue as authorities address the effects of the haze.

With continued monitoring and healthy habits, acute respiratory infection cases in South Kalimantan are expected to continue declining, he added.
