Gill's 223, Rohit's 101 power India to record 406-run chase against West Indies

Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 off 133 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history, and Rohit Sharma's 101 helped India chase down 406 against West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati on Wednesday.

India completed their highest successful chase in the format with 39 balls to spare, winning by eight wickets and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.India became only the second team to chase a target of 400 or more in men's ODIs, after South Africa chased 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006. India finished on 406 for two in 43.3 overs after West Indies had posted their highest ODI total of 405 for seven.

Gill remained unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, hitting 26 fours and eight sixes, while Rohit scored 101 off 75 balls with 10 fours and six sixes. The opening pair added 255 runs for the first wicket, giving India a strong start to the chase.Gill's innings was the highest individual score in an ODI chase and the highest by a captain in the format.The 27-year-old had to deal with cramps and a painful neck during his innings, but continued to take the Windies attack apart.

He now has 11 ODI hundreds in 69 matches.Gill's innings came alongside Rohit, the only other batter to have scored multiple double-centuries in ODIs.The conditions at Guwahati offered little help to the bowlers. However, batters still needed skill, discipline, intent, appetite and fitness to complete the chase. Gill's innings provided all of that as India completed the second successful 400-plus chase in ODI history in only 43.3 overs.The conditions also put Kuldeep Yadav's figures of 2-65 from 10 overs into context. Kuldeep became the second-quickest Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets during the match.
