Oriental Mindoro cops allay public fears after violent incidents

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The Oriental Mindoro Police Provincial Office allayed public concerns over recent violent incidents across towns, stressing that these were isolated offenses. 

In an official statement, Police Col. Edison V. Revita, the provincial police director, acknowledged growing community worry but assured the public that current assessments show these cases were not interrelated. 

Among the incidents recorded by local police are two shooting cases in the town of Pinamalayan, two in the municipality of Gloria — including the killing of an overseas Filipino worker who was shot while drinking coffee at a waiting shed.

Also spotlighted recently were the fatal shooting of an online shopping employee in the tourist town of Puerto Galera, and a shootout in Socorro town involving a suspect who resisted arrest while about to be served a warrant. 

Despite the string of violence, Revita said there is no sign of a broader, coordinated threat. “The ORMIN PPO takes these incidents seriously. Based on current information and initial assessments, these incidents are being treated as separate cases, with no established indication at this time of a single, coordinated threat across the province,” the statement read. 

Each incident is undergoing thorough investigation to establish facts, determine circumstances, and build strong cases for prosecution, Revita added. 

To address the situation, the provincial police force has strengthened its enforcement of firearms laws, increased police visibility and patrols, enhanced coordination with local governments, other law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders, and intensified operations against wanted suspects and criminal personalities.

Revita also said recent operations have already resulted in the apprehension of persons linked to some reported incidents, while other cases remain under active investigation.

The police urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, rely only on verified information, refrain from spreading unconfirmed reports, and promptly share any suspicious information that may assist ongoing investigations./coa
