JUST IN: Police confirm SEVENTH woman found dead near Tembisa

Police have confirmed a seventh woman’s body has been found in Clayville, near Tembisa Mall, widening an already urgent investigation into a series of women’s deaths across Ekurhuleni.

Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana said the unidentified woman was found floating in a river.

Police found no visible injuries on the body, but Kekana said investigators were not ruling out a possible connection to the other cases.

“There is no injuries that were found, visible injuries, but we don’t leave anything,” Kekana said.

He said police had added the case to the broader investigation while forensic teams work to establish whether any links exist.

Preliminary examination points to strangulation in another case

Kekana also revealed a significant development in a separate woman’s death under investigation.

He said a pathologist who examined a woman found on Tuesday had made a preliminary finding that she appeared to have suffered compression to the neck.

“The preliminary report is that the lady seems to have been strangled, pressed on the neck,” Kekana said.

Police will, however, wait for the formal post-mortem before confirming the cause of death.

Kekana said pathologists were expected to conduct the post-mortem at the Tshwane Government Mortuary on Wednesday morning.

Only two of seven women identified

Kekana said authorities have so far identified two of the seven women.

The woman found in Clayville remains unidentified.

Police forensic teams are working with Gauteng Health pathologists to establish the identities of the remaining women.

The development adds further urgency to an investigation that began after several women’s bodies were discovered in and around Kempton Park and other parts of Ekurhuleni.

Police have repeatedly stressed that they have not established that all the deaths are linked.

Investigators are examining each case, including forensic evidence and the circumstances in which the women were found, before drawing conclusions.

Top police leadership to meet investigators

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane are expected to meet the investigating team at about 18:00 on Tuesday.

Kekana said the meeting would allow the country’s police leadership to receive the latest information and give further direction to the investigation.
