Alberta's police watchdog is investigating after Edmonton police officers shot and killed a man armed with a firearm, following reports the man shot a woman and an infant at a home in west Edmonton Sunday.
Edmonton Police Service said in a news release Sunday night that the man, 36, died at the scene.
EPS said that officers responded to a residence in the area of Donsdale Drive and 45th Avenue Sunday morning where it was reported that a man with a firearm entered the home and shot a woman and infant inside.
According to police when officers arrived at the scene they were "met by witnesses and the injured parties and immediately began establishing containment of the residence."
The 36-year-old man then opened the front door armed with a gun and when he did not comply with verbal direction, three officers discharged their firearms, EPS said.
The EPS tactical emergency medical support team attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene, police said.
An infant and two women were treated and transported to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Police Review Commission was notified about the incident and has since directed the the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate.
