Antonelli breaks Vettel’s record, crowned F1 World Champion at 20

Translate

Kimi Antonelli is officially the youngest Formula 1 World Champion ever.

The 20-year-old wrapped up the F1 Drivers’ Championship with a podium finish in Mexico City.

Here’s how he compares with Sebastian Vettel and other young champions.

The previous record-holder was Sebastian Vettel, according to BBC Sport.

When he claimed the title in 2010, the German legend was only 23 years and 134 days old.

British veteran Lewis Hamilton is now third on the list.

He was 23 years and 300 days old when he sealed the Drivers’ Championship in 2008.

Hamilton finished second at the Mexican GP, showing his lasting impact in motorsport.

Fernando Alonso also once held the record after his championship win in 2005.

A podium finish in Brazil saw him take the title at 24 years and 57 days old.

The winner in Mexico is now the fifth-youngest F1 champion.

Max Verstappen produced a Driver of the Day performance to win the race.

It was never going to be enough to recreate his 2021 championship, at 24 years and 73 days old.

When does the Formula 1 season end?

The circuit moves to Interlagos next weekend (8 November) for the São Paulo GP.

F1 then returns to North America for the Las Vegas Grand Prix on 21 November.

The last two races should be the Qatar and Abu Dhabi GPs, according to the F1 website.

Both events were postponed due to the US-Israel-Iran conflict, which continues to be felt across the world.

According to Motorsport.com, F1 boss Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes the Grands Prix will still happen.

However, he also admitted that the situation remained uncertain.

Earlier in the season, the Bahrain GP was moved from the Middle East to Malaysia’s iconic Sepang Circuit.

Meanwhile, Verstappen has leapfrogged Hamilton to sit second in the standings.

Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell is fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Lando Norris.
