Osinachi Ohale retires from Super Falcons after 16 years

Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has brought the curtain down on her international career, announcing her retirement from football at the age of 34 after 16 years of representing Nigeria.

Ohale made the emotional announcement on Friday through a farewell statement on her Instagram page, ending a remarkable journey that saw her earn 86 caps, feature at four FIFA Women’s World Cups and compete at seven editions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Her decision comes after Nigeria fell short in the race for qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the experienced centre-back having been part of the Super Falcons squad during the latest campaign.

Ohale admitted that walking away from the national team was one of the most difficult decisions of her career after spending more than a decade wearing the green and white.

“There are moments in life when words are simply not enough. Today is one of those moments,” she wrote.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football.”

86 caps, four World Cups and seven WAFCON appearances

From her senior debut in 2010, Ohale became a constant presence in the Super Falcons setup, playing under different coaches and alongside several generations of Nigerian players.

Her international career took her to four FIFA Women’s World Cups; 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, while she also featured at seven WAFCON tournaments.

She leaves the national team as a five-time African champion, having been part of Nigeria’s title-winning squads in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024.

The 2024 WAFCON tournament was staged in Morocco in July 2025 after being postponed from its original schedule, with Nigeria reclaiming the continental crown by defeating the hosts 3-2 in the final.

Ohale was on the pitch that night and produced another memorable contribution to Nigeria’s title triumph.

She scored as the Super Falcons recovered from two goals down to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final, adding another defining moment to a career already filled with major tournaments and trophies.

Australia 2023 remains one of her biggest moments

Among the many highlights of Ohale’s international career was her performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Nigeria faced co-hosts Australia in the group stage and produced a thrilling 3-2 victory, with Ohale scoring the Super Falcons’ second goal to help turn the game in Nigeria’s favour.

It was one of the standout moments of a tournament in which Nigeria advanced from a difficult group and reached the knockout stage.

But for Ohale, the memories go beyond goals, trophies and appearances.

“I have stood on the biggest stages in the world, representing Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups and seven WAFCON, and I am incredibly proud that we lifted the African title five times,” she wrote.

“But beyond the numbers and trophies are the memories that will stay with me forever, the tears, the celebrations, the difficult moments, the victories, the defeats, the friendships, the sacrifices, and every time I stood proudly with my hand over my heart and heard the Nigerian anthem.”

‘I would choose Nigeria every single time’

Ohale’s farewell message was as much about gratitude as it was about retirement.

Looking back on the journey from the young player who dreamed of representing Nigeria to becoming one of the country’s most experienced defenders, she reflected on the sacrifices that came with wearing the national-team shirt.

“I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”

She also paid tribute to the people who shared the journey with her, including her teammates, coaches, technical staff, family, friends and the Nigeria Football Federation.

“To my teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends, Nigeria Football Federation and everyone who walked this journey with me, thank you. You became part of a chapter of my life that I will treasure forever,” she wrote.

The veteran defender also reserved special appreciation for the Nigerian supporters who followed the Super Falcons through their successes and difficult moments.

“To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special.”

‘The jersey will leave my shoulders, but never my heart’

Ohale’s international career ends with an impressive résumé: 86 caps, 16 years, four World Cups, seven WAFCON appearances and five African titles.

But as she reflected on the numbers, the defender made it clear that her greatest source of pride was simply having the opportunity to represent Nigeria.

“Today, I say goodbye to international football with no regrets, only gratitude.

“86 caps, 16 years, 4 World Cups, 7 WAFCON, 5 WAFCON titles.

“But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country.”

She ended her farewell with a message that captured the depth of her connection to the Super Falcons.

“The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart. Thank you, Nigeria, for allowing me to live my dream.”

A career that continues beyond the Super Falcons

Although Ohale has stepped away from international football, her club career continues.

The 34-year-old currently plays for Pachuca in Mexico, following an international club career that has also taken her to the United States, Sweden and Spain, including a spell with Alavés.

Her retirement therefore closes one chapter rather than bringing her football journey to an end.

For Nigeria, however, the departure of one of its most experienced defenders marks the end of a significant era.

From her first appearance in 2010 to her final years as one of the senior figures in the Super Falcons dressing room, Ohale was part of five African title-winning teams and represented the country on football’s biggest stages.

She leaves international football with 86 appearances, five WAFCON winners’ medals and four World Cup appearances, but above all, with the gratitude of a player who gave 16 years to the Nigerian jersey.
