The prestigious annual Emmy Awards celebrate the best of the small screen. Among this year’s biggest winners, The Pitt, a critically acclaimed show following medical staff in an emergency department in Pittsburgh, swept up the drama category wins – including a second lead actor nod for Noah Wyle.

But it was the supernatural horror-comedy Widow’s Bay that made history. The British actor Matthew Rhys is the first actor to win two leading awards in one ceremony, for both Widow’s Bay and the limited series The Beast In Me.

Rhys dedicated his award on stage "to the great and good people of Wales, who were as much a nurture as anyone else".

A word-of-mouth hit, Widow’s Bay debuted on Apple TV back in April, but will no doubt reach new audiences following its Emmy glory. The TV show won 14 out of its 19 nominations, becoming the most-awarded comedy series ever – a title previously held by Seth Rogen’s The Studio.

Blending the humour of Parks and Recreation or Schitt’s Creek with the supernatural and horror elements of Twin Peaks or Stranger Things, here’s where to watch Widow’s Bay in the UK.

Where to watch Widow’s Bay in the UK

Widow’s Bay is available exclusively on Apple TV. A seven-day free trial is available – plenty of time to binge all 10 episodes – with a subscription costing £9.99 per month thereafter.

Widow’s Bay cast and plot

The horror-comedy is set on an isolated New England island. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to modernise the town and make it a tourist hotspot for mainlanders, angling it as the new Martha’s Vineyard to travel journalists.

Loftis fiercely denies the local folklore, but the cursed island’s hexes, haunted hotels, killer clowns and fatal fogs say otherwise. Alongside Rhys, the series stars Kate O’Flynn as his sharp-tongued assistant Patricia, Kevin Carroll as Sheriff Bechir Clemmons, and Stephen Root as Wyck Crawford, an outspoken believer in the town's supernatural history.
