Trevor Ombija Backs Ruto’s 2027 Re-election Bid, Citing Nyanza Development Projects

Citizen TV journalist and Nyakach parliamentary aspirant Trevor Ombija has thrown his weight behind President William Ruto’s bid for a second term, citing ongoing development projects in Nyanza as evidence of the government’s performance.

Ombija, who is seeking to represent Nyakach in the 2027 General Election, pointed to major infrastructure and healthcare projects in the region as reasons why he believes Ruto deserves another term in office.

Ombija highlights Ruto’s Nyanza projects

Among the projects highlighted by Ombija was the ongoing upgrade of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, which he described as a landmark investment with the potential to transform healthcare services in the region.

He also pointed to the Rironi-Mau Summit dual carriageway, arguing that the project would significantly improve transport and connectivity between Nairobi, Western Kenya and Nyanza.

Ombija recalled an experience of being stranded overnight on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway because of heavy traffic during the Christmas holiday, saying the road upgrade was long overdue.

“For 60 years, no one constructed this highway. It is President Ruto who is doing it now. I remember sleeping on that road during the Christmas holiday because of heavy traffic. But now It’s under construction. Let’s give Ruto another term, please,” said Ombija.

The journalist further cited the planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha towards Kisumu and Malava as another major project that could unlock the economic potential of the Nyanza region.

He urged residents of Nyakach to support Ruto’s re-election bid, arguing that another term would allow the government to continue implementing development and empowerment programmes in the area.

Ombija warns voters against corrupt leaders

Beyond endorsing Ruto, Ombija also urged voters to be cautious when choosing leaders in the 2027 elections.

He cautioned residents against electing individuals he described as corrupt, linking the need for development to the importance of choosing leaders capable of managing public resources responsibly.

His remarks mark a significant shift for the journalist, who is now combining his public profile in the media with an increasingly active role in electoral politics.

Journalists turn to politics

Ombija is among several prominent journalists and media personalities who have expressed interest in elective politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Other media figures in the race include Peter Wanyama, who is eyeing the Malava parliamentary seat; Stephen Letoo, who has declared his interest in Kilgoris; Lulu Hassan, who is seeking the Mvita seat; Mwanaisha Hamadi, who is targeting Likoni; and Tinah Ogal, who is pursuing the Embakasi East seat.

Ombija’s political journey has also attracted interest because of his unconventional rise in the media industry.

He has previously spoken openly about working as a matatu conductor and toilet cleaner before building a career in television.
