Ghana moves beyond peace and stability in battle for investors – GIPA CEO

Ghana is pitching reforms, credible leadership and investment returns as it seeks to stand out in an increasingly competitive regional market, Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA) CEO Simon Madjie has said.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition, he said the country’s investment proposition now extends beyond its reputation for political stability.

“So, Ghana is not just selling political stability. Ghana is selling reforms.”

His comments followed a question from host George Wiafe about competition from neighbouring economies. Wiafe asked whether Ghana’s traditional advantages remained enough to attract investors as other markets improved their offerings.

Madjie acknowledged the challenge. But he argued that Ghana was building a broader case for investment through changes designed to benefit both businesses and citizens.

He pointed to changes in tax and customs laws as part of that effort. He also identified leadership credibility as a key element of the country’s pitch.

“Because you need reforms to keep growing your investment here, and who is offering you that credibility through leadership at every level, from the head of state, who is the president, through the minister, to agencies, to local municipal, this is what we are offering.”

Madjie said the proposition involved leadership across government, from the presidency and ministries to agencies and local authorities. He presented this as a coordinated effort to create conditions for long-term investment.

“So we know we have natural advantages, but we've moved beyond that to creating an environment where businesses can actually thrive and prosper.”

He also pointed to sector policies as evidence of the direction Ghana was taking. These included a new textiles policy, an agribusiness policy and a policy on component manufacturing.

According to Madjie, these measures aim to make Ghana a destination for business growth and prosperity.

“All of these are geared towards making us that place where, when people think about Ghana, they think about a place to thrive, a place to do business, and a place to prosper.”
