SAN DIEGO -- The Padres will attempt to save their season in Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Tuesday night, and they'll have to do so without their star closer.

Mason Miller, whose wife was expecting the couple's first child, was placed on the paternity list roughly 45 minutes before the first pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers. Lefty reliever Wandy Peralta will replace him on the roster.

Miller would be eligible to come back as early as Wednesday's Game 4, though the Padres, trailing 2-0 in this best-of-five series, must win to force it. Miller's last appearance came on Sunday night, when he came back out for the ninth inning with a one-run lead, walked the bases loaded, then gave up a two-out, game-winning single to Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio.

Miller threw 40 pitches and recorded six outs for only the third time this season. Still, the Padres would have likely used him in a save situation in Game 3. Padres manager Craig Stammen said Michael King, who's lined up to start a potential winner-take-all Game 5, will be in the bullpen on Tuesday and could be available under the right circumstances.

Major League Baseball's paternity list allows players to be away from their teams for a maximum of three days.
