The Wheel Of Time Is Finally Giving Fans Official Closure In 2027

Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

When it comes to the fantasy genre, big hitters such as The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones set the precedent when it comes to successful movies and television shows. As such, despite The Wheel of Time rallying an impressive fanbase after airing for the first time back in 2021, it ended in tears after the show was unceremoniously canceled after just three seasons due to high production costs, insufficient viewership, and leadership changes at Amazon MGM Studios.

Following its cancellation, fans took to social media in a desperate attempt to save the show, even making the hashtag #SaveWOT trend across Twitter/X. However, with still no news of a renewal over a year on, it is safe to say that Amazon is sticking by its decision.

Based on the fantasy book series of the same name by later author Robert Jordan, the story follows the Moiraine Damodred, a group of powerful women who can channel the One Power. Believing that a young person from a secluded village may just be the reincarnation of the Dragon, an extremely powerful channeller responsible for the Breaking of the World, they must find them as the prophecy says that this special being will either save the world from a primordial being or break it once more.

Whilst it seems as though the story will not be continued on the big screen, despite the original book series offering much more of a story to tell, it is not all doom and gloom, as War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is set to delve more into the fantasy world when it launches in 2027.

Created by Dire Wolf and swiftly becoming one of the most successful campaigns in Kickstarter history, War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is the first board game adapted from Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series. As the official item description reads:

"The Wheel of Time chronicles the epic conflict between the forces of light and darkness, embodied in Rand al'Thor, The Dragon Reborn, and his eternal nemesis, The Dark One. War of the Dragon is a grand strategy board game where players step into those roles to wage war across a land of magic, ancient prophecies, and powerful armies set to save the world... or destroy it."

Wheel of Time War of the Dragon board game components all laid out next to the box.

Combining tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics, players will need to survive and conquer in both a Hero and Epic Mode. In Hero Mode, one to four players will be tasked with taking on the roles of The Dragon and The Dark One as they gather their most trusted allies and lieutenants to complete missions and assert dominance over multiple regions. Alternatively, Epic Mode is for two players, putting you in charge of commanding massive armies which you can upgrade and enhance as the game goes on.

Whilst the Kickstarter campaign for War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time has now come to an end, the epic board game is set to be released in 2027, and, as such, you can expect it to become available at major retailers. So, if you missed out on pledging and bagging yourself an early copy, it is not the end of the world.

Not only that, but this is the perfect way to see how the events of The Wheel of Time end, with you at the very helm.
