Calicut FC moved back to the top of the table in the Super League Kerala in some style. The Calicut men thrashed Malappuram FC 6-2 at the Payyanad Stadium on Sunday night.

For the first 39 minutes of the match, there were no goals. And then there was a deluge.

It was Calwin Thomas who started it, scoring Calicut’s first goal in the 40th minute. A couple of minutes later, Alexis Sosa made it 2-0.

Malappuram could barely recover from that double blow when Leo David scored the third goal, off an excellent pass into the box from Federico Boasso. The visitors led 3-0 at half-time.

It didn’t take them long to add on to Malappuram’s misery in the second half. Boasso struck in the opening minute itself, as Calicut went 4-0 up, stunning the Malappuram fans, who had come in large numbers yet again.

They all got some relief when Amadou Soukouna scored just two minutes after Boasso’s goal, but Calicut wasn’t done for the night yet. Leo netted his second goal to make it 5-1.

Four minutes later, Boasso got his second to make it a tennis score for Calicut. Nedim Hadzic, however, managed to make it 2-6 for the host.

After the sixth round of matches, Calicut has 14 points, one more than the second-placed Forca Kochi. Malappuram is lying third with eight points.

Result

Malappuram FC 2 (Amadou Soukouna 49, Nedim Hadzic 90) lost to Calicut FC 6 (Calwin Thomas 40, Alexis Sosa 42, Leo David 45 & 74, Federico Boasso 46 & 79).
