‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Eyes Season 3 Shakeup — If It’s Renewed
Should Monarch: Legacy of Monsters return for a third season on Apple TV, it will likely look somewhat different — both in front of and behind the camera.
The streamer and producer Legendary Television are in talks for a third season of the show set in Legendary’s Monsterverse, with ties to the Godzilla and King Kong movies of the past decade. Season two of Monarch ran earlier this year, filling in events in the first part of the franchise’s timeline (the series takes place in both 2017 and earlier points in the Titan-tracking organization Monarch’s history).
If a third season comes to pass, the series will go in a new direction, and with new writers. Matt Fraction and Chris Black created the series, with Black serving as showrunner on season two. Black, Jen Roskind, Matt Shakman, Lawrence Trilling, Andrew Colville, and Toho Co.’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produced season two.
On screen, a third season of Monarch would likely feature new Titans — the Monsterverse terminology for the likes of Godzilla, King Kong and other giant monsters. The fates of the show’s human cast, however, remains unsettled. Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell star in the series. Wyatt and Kurt Russell play the same character, Lee Shaw, in different eras.
The potential changes to Monarch will not affect a prequel series starring Wyatt Russell that Apple greenlit late last year. Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) is the showrunner on that project. On the feature film side, the next installment of the franchise, Godzilla vs. Kong: Supernova, is set for release in 2027.
