News24 | Anti-foreigner violence erupts outside ConCourt
Anti-foreigner violence erupted outside the Constitutional Court on Friday.
This comes against the backdrop of a wave of unrest in Durban and Soweto, which started on Thursday.
It follows a now-withdrawn directive the Department of Home Affairs issued late last month, effectively compelling refugee reception offices to accept asylum applications in line with a judgment handed down by the apex court in July.
An estimated 300 people gathered outside the Constitutional Court on Friday.
News24 arrived at the scene to find the remnants of burnt tyres and a torched vehicle, and was told that more than one person had attempted to enter the premises with a panga.
The court building was under lockdown amid a heavy police presence until the protesters eventually handed over a memorandum, and dispersed, making their way to the Home Affairs offices in the city centre.
They demanded a response to the memorandum within seven days.
This is a developing story.
