RI to review wiretap regulations after alleged spying on president

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will review regulations governing electronic surveillance following the arrest of senior police officers accused of illegally wiretapping President Prabowo Subianto, ministers, and media outlets, a senior official said.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra confirmed Tuesday evening that the administration will evaluate existing safeguards alongside the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs and the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN).
While state bodies such as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Attorney General's Office, National Narcotics Agency (BNN), and National Police hold statutory authority to execute court-sanctioned wiretaps, Mahendra emphasized that unauthorized surveillance constitutes a serious offense under the Criminal Code and the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law.
"Of course, we will conduct an evaluation," Mahendra said, underscoring that strict adherence to legal procedure is mandatory to prevent abuse of power.
The regulatory review follows criminal charges levied by the police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) against three officers—identified as LSP, ASN, and EH—for unauthorized access, data deletion, and illegal wiretapping targeting top government leadership and press members dating back to 2025.
