Manisha Bhanwala created history in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday as she became the first-ever Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Wrestling World Championships.
The 29-year-old Manisha came from behind to defeat USA’s Abigail Nette 8-6 in a thrilling 59kg final.
Manisha began her campaign in the non-Olympic weight category with a ‘Victory By Fall’ over Canada’s Laurence Beauregard in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the Indian took down Mongolia’s Bolortuya Khurelkhuu with a 6-0 scoreline. In the semifinals, the wrestler from Haryana defeated local favourite Altyn Shagayeva via technical superiority.
Manisha is only the second Indian wrestler after Sushil Kumar (66kg, 2010 Moscow) to win the gold medal at the prestigious tournament.
At the ongoing edition, Manisha is the fourth Indian medallist in women’s wrestling after Neelam Sirohi (silver, 50kg), Kajal Dhochak (silver, 76kg) and Tanu Sharma (bronze, 72kg).
