South Korea pip Ker Ying-Yiat Qing to silver in Asiad diving

KUALA LUMPUR: Ong Ker Ying–Lee Yiat Qing had a slim chance at silver in the women's 3m springboard synchro, but South Korea's stronger final dive left the Malaysians with bronze at the Asian Games on Sunday.

Ker Ying and Yiat Qing finished with 243.72 points at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

China's Chen Yi Wen–Chen Jia won gold with 328.56 ahead of South Korea's Kim Su Ji–Kim Nah Yun took silver with 254.70.

After four rounds, the Koreans led the Malaysians by just 5.58 points, helped by a poor penultimate score, heading into the final dive.

Ker Ying-Yiat Qing's final dive scored 52.20, but Su Ji-Nah Yun recovered with a 57.60 dive to seal silver for South Korea.

Malaysia Aquatics diving technical director Yeoh Ken Nee said the pair had performed well despite missing out on second place.

"We had a chance of getting silver, but Korea's last dive was better than ours, so we missed out," he said.

It was Ker Ying's first Asian Games medal, after a career that has been disrupted by persistent injuries.

For Yiat Qing, the bronze came on her Asian Games debut.

Ken Nee said she had coped well with the demands of the competition.

"She handled the pressure very well and performed confidently," he said.

"Overall, both divers did a great job and deserve credit for their effort today."

The result gave Malaysia their second diving bronze of the Games.

Yong Rui Jie–Nurqayyum Nazim Nazmi won the men's 3m springboard synchro bronze on Saturday.
