There have been a lot of great Super Mario games over the years, but the general trend is that people tend to move on to the next one when it release, without much consideration (if you exclude speedrunners and the odd fan). In one sense, that's a big compliment to Nintendo, who have consistently delivered new experiences that people want to play, without yearning to return to older titles.

In another, it would be nice if previous releases continued to pop up moving forward, and a great way of doing that is engaging the modding community in the process. Though Nintendo games haven't been too open to that in the past, that has very much changed in recent years, and the latest effort combines two of the better games in the series from the last ten years or so.

Super Mario Galactic Wonder Nintendo/YouTube: Memetendo Plus and Team Fury

Over on YouTube, you should be able to find the trailer for Super Mario Galactic Wonder, a mod for the Switch version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder that adds 10 new levels to the game. Not only that, but those levels draw inspiration from what might be the best Mario game in history, Super Mario Galaxy.

As you might expect, there were plenty of fans who were very excited to try out the project for the first time, with one saying, "This looks absolutely incredible! I am a Super Mario Galaxy fan, and this is just crazy to see."

While another added, "Wow, I'm shocked at how well people are learning to mod this game, despite its recency! Usually, for Super Mario games, it takes at least half a decade or so before people manage to implement brand-new levels, enemies, items and so on... Looks super fun!"

"Not even fan-made mods are safe from the constant Super Mario Galaxy love coming to us in this day and age. Frankly, I'd say that isn't really a bad thing. This looks incredible! I'm definitely interested in checking this one out next year!" a third said.

The mod is totally free to download via the Discord link in the video's description, though you'll want to make sure you have a legitimate copy of the game to keep everything on a steady legal footing.

Yoshi and Mario in Super Mario Galaxy 2

As for what's coming next for the Super Mario series, we're still very much in the dark about what Nintendo are planning moving forward. Miyamoto seems to be pointing us towards a new 3D release coming down the pipeline, but don't expect to be playing it until the back half of 2027.
