An upcoming sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender is replacing two of the franchise's most famous main characters. The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has been very busy in recent years. Netflix's live-action series recently finished its second season, the franchise got its first film in Avatar Aang, and there was even a fairly successful video game release, Avatar Legends, all of which happened in 2026.

For all of its recent projects, however, the Last Airbender franchise hasn't really pushed forward much. Netflix's show is obviously a remake of the original series, Avatar Legends is a spinoff, and Avatar Aang takes place between the original and The Legend of Korra. One upcoming Last Airbender show, however, is finally ready to move into the franchise's future, and it's coming in less than a week.

Avatar: Seven Havens, the first Last Airbender sequel show since The Legend of Korra, is set to premiere on Paramount+ with its first three episodes on Friday, October 9. Seven Havens is set to go further into the Last Airbender timeline than ever before, to a dystopian future where the Avatar is widely hated instead of being viewed as an agent of balance. Seven Havens has big changes planned, the biggest of which includes replacing The Last Airbender's main characters.

In keeping with the tradition The Legend of Korra established, Avatar: Seven Havens is also introducing the next Avatar, an Earthbender named Pavi (Saheli Khan). Based on the nature of the Avatar Cycle, which sees each Avatar's soul reincarnated into the next generation, Pavi's very existence means that both Aang and Korra will be dead by the time of Seven Havens. While the Avatar Cycle did restart with Korra, the basic idea of reincarnation remains, and Korra will be the only past life Pavi can speak with.

Pavi is the first new Avatar in over a decade, since The Legend of Korra began in 2012. Given the franchise's most recent projects, Seven Havens will also be the first time a Last Airbender story hasn't focused on Aang since 2014. There's even a chance Aang won't appear in Seven Havens at all, given the previously mentioned restart of the Avatar Cycle brought on by Korra. Korra, however, will at least appear in flashbacks, as teased by Seven Havens' trailer.

Seven Havens will also introduce a new "Team Avatar" to replace Sokka, Katara, Toph, and Zuko from The Last Airbender and Bolin, Mako, and Asami from The Legend of Korra. According to the show's synopsis, Pavi will be joined by an animal companion, Geet (Dee Bradley Baker), and an airbender who serves as her mentor, Jae (Major Curda). In a bit of a twist, Pavi also has a long-lost twin sister, Nisha (Aishu Devan). With the new Avatar series comes a whole new cast of characters.

Avatar Has Already Proved It Can Successfully Switch Main Characters

Korra from The Legend Of Korra

Luckily for Avatar: Seven Havens, this franchise has already decisively proven that it can successfully switch main characters. The Legend of Korra already did exactly that by replacing Aang with Korra. There were, admittedly, some growing pains at first, as a vocal minority of viewers disliked Korra for her brash personality and how different she was from Aang. However, The Legend of Korra is now viewed as one of the best Last Airbender shows in the franchise.

Despite the controversy The Legend of Korra faced when it started — and in some ways because of that controversy — The Last Airbender has proven that it can switch main characters better than almost any other franchise. Much of the division Korra sparked as a character sprouted from the fact that her show went in a wildly different direction from the original. The show wasn't afraid to push the envelope and tell a new story, which is one of the reasons The Legend of Korra has aged so beautifully.

The Legend of Korra should be proof enough that Avatar Studios can handle Pavi and Seven Havens with the same amount of grace and quality that they handled Korra. Pavi will likely be just as great and unique of a protagonist as Aang or Korra, she'll likely get a story to rival the predecessor shows, and Avatar: Seven Havens could end up being the best installment in the Last Airbender franchise in over a decade.
