Bafana star Mbekezeli Mbokazi hailed as MLS’s best centre-back

Bafana Bafana and Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been described as one of the best centre-backs in Major League Soccer following his impressive return to action.

The 21-year-old centre-back moved to the United States in January after leaving Orlando Pirates and has quickly established himself as an important figure in Chicago’s defence.

Mbokazi made his official return over the weekend during Chicago Fire’s 1-0 victory over Charlotte FC, putting in a composed display as he helped his side keep a clean sheet.

His performance has now earned praise from MLS, with the league highlighting the South African’s impact on Chicago’s defensive setup.

“Simply put, it’s hard to overstate Mbokazi’s impact on Chicago’s defensive setup. The same was true for South Africa when he was shining at this summer’s FIFA World Cup,” an MLS report stated.

“With elite defensive range, Mbokazi’s ability to sweep up danger behind the Fire’s backline has proven crucial in 2026. That was certainly the case for Berhalter’s outfit over the weekend.

“Up against a Charlotte team eager to get out in transition, Mbokazi made it his mission to snuff out their host’s quick attacking forays. But it’s not just the youngster’s ability to get out and run that impresses. It’s also strength that creates a knack for winning the ball.”

The praise underlines the growing reputation Mbokazi has built since making the move to MLS.

After missing time through injury, his return provides Chicago with another defensive option as the club enters the business end of the season, while Bafana Bafana will also be encouraged by the centre-back’s continued development.
