A new redesign of Godzilla unleashes the King of Monster's claws like never before, giving the towering kaiju a shocking upgrade. However, up against a surprising opponent, can even this upgraded Godzilla win the day?
Across the years, Godzilla has wracked up a formidable natural arsenal, from his atomic breath to his whip-like tail to his magnetic powers (okay, those only appeared in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.) Now, he adds terrifying retractable claws to that list.
Or, at least, ONE version of Godzilla does, as fans tour an entire multiverse of kaiju drawn from both Marvel Comics and Godzilla lore, with Mothra, Fin Fang Foom, Rodan, Giganto, Kumonga, Torg the Abominable Snow-King, Maguma, Titanosaurus and more competing for membership in Doctor Doom's kaiju army.
Weapon 'Zilla Officially Debuts
After months of teasing, the recent Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #1 finally unleashed its official Wolverine/Godzilla hybrid. Originating in Drew Baumgartner's 2025 variant cover for Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #4, this new issue finally makes the character canon, and gives it the official codename 'Weapon 'Zilla' - a reference to Wolverine’s former codename as Weapon X.
The third in Marvel's Godzilla trilogy, Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse sees Doctor Doom traveling the multiverse, collecting kaiju who he believes can fight back against the version of Godzilla which has conquered Earth-616, enhanced and controlled by the symbiotes of Knull, aka the King in Black.

Fans knew that Weapon 'Zilla was coming, but not the character's backstory. The issue reveals that the kaiju originates from Earth-8873 - a reality where "the biggest monsters interbred and became the dominant life-form." This is a world truly conquered by kaiju, with Weapon 'Zilla as the ultimate outcome.
Sadly, fans only see the monster for a moment, with Marvel promising that the next issue will unleash Weapon 'Zilla's full potential.
Doctor Doom's Kaiju Army Is Finally Coming Together
So far, Doom's team have acquired a Fin Fang Foom mech made out of pure adamantium and piloted by the Punisher, as well as a suspiciously innocent pink, sponge-like monster with clear hidden potential. Other than that, no other kaiju on the multiversal trip has lived up to Knull's Godzilla, making Weapon 'Zilla an essential recruit to Doom's mission.
However, Doom's team don't just need to worry about Godzilla. Knull has gotten wise to their plan, and assembled a 'Kill Krew' of symbiote-controlled heroes, including the Fantastic Four, Doctor Octopus, the Silver Surfer and America Chavez. For even a chance of taking out Godzilla, Doom's team will have to take out this incredibly powerful team first.
It's Been a Weird Few Years for Wolverine Variants
As bizarre as it is to see a canon Godzilla/Wolverine combo, that's only part of a bizarre few years for Wolverine. Every Marvel character has some strange variants, but Wolverine has been the focus of Marvel's most imaginative efforts lately.
Over in Saladin Ahmed and Julius Ohta's Wolverine, Marvel has introduced the concept of a 'Savage Champion' - a multiversal constant defined by an equal mix of humanity, animal and metal. Wolverine is the Savage Champion of Earth-616, but has been encountering other versions of the role from very different realities.
Meanwhile, Marvel has introduced characters including the Ghost Rider-inspired Hellverine, the spider-powered Weapon VIII and the Weapon X-Men team, made up of Wolverine variants.
Jeff the Landshark introduced the Iron Man-esque hero Wolverine-Man, while the recent Queen in Black #2 used a single panel to introduce Logan the Barbarian, bande dessinée-inspired Le Carcajou, the Lovecraftian W'ul-verioth and the zombie Skullverine.
Now, Weapon 'Zilla joins the gang, as Marvel combines the incredible power of Godzilla with the visceral claws of Wolverine. But can even this fusion monstrosity take on the original Godzilla plus Knull's superhero army, or will this Wolverine-inspired kaiju fall before the one true King of Monsters?
Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
