Indonesia seeks fisheries graduates to support vessel modernization

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is identifying its human resource needs among marine and fisheries vocational graduates to support national priority programs.

Taufik, a representative of the ministry’s Directorate General of Capture Fisheries, said qualified personnel were essential to ensure that national priority programs delivered more than physical infrastructure and ultimately improved productivity and fishers’ welfare.

He said the ministry had identified several civil service positions suitable for vocational graduates to support its Red and White Fishing Villages and fishing vessel modernization programs.

For the vessel modernization initiative, the ministry needs marine and fisheries managers with a bachelor’s degree in naval architecture or marine engineering, or a four-year applied bachelor’s degree in fisheries engineering.

It also requires capture fisheries production managers to support fishing operations. Eligible educational backgrounds include applied bachelor’s degrees in fishing technology, fisheries engineering, aquatic resource management technology, or fishery product processing technology.

In addition, the ministry is seeking personnel to serve as harbourmasters at fishing ports.

These positions are open to graduates with an applied bachelor’s degree in fishing technology or fisheries engineering who hold the required Fishing Vessel Nautical Officer (ANKAPIN) or Fishing Vessel Technical Officer (ATKAPIN) certification.

Taufik said harbourmasters played an important role in delivering government services and managing the Red and White Fishing Villages. He also encouraged various students and graduates of marine and fisheries vocational education programs to prepare for the civil service recruitment process for these positions.

“These are full civil servant positions, not contract-based government employee roles. They are expected to become permanent civil servants moving forward because these positions are crucial to implementing national priority programs,” he said.

As part of efforts to transform marine and fisheries education, the ministry has established the Ocean Institute of Indonesia (OII) by merging 11 universities and polytechnics under its administration.

OII currently has around 5,955 students enrolled in marine and fisheries vocational education programs, comprising 5,074 higher education students and 881 secondary education students.

The ministry aims to establish 5,000 Red and White Fishing Villages by 2029. The program is also supported by plans to build and distribute 4,582 modern fishing vessels to support fishing operations.
