Govt refines Giant Sea Wall master plan to curb Java coastal flooding
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is accelerating the refinement of the master plan for the ambitious 575-kilometer Giant Sea Wall (GSW) project, prioritizing high-risk zones along Java’s northern coast to combat severe land subsidence and rising sea levels.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) that his ministry is working closely with regional leaders to translate macro-level strategies into immediate, actionable engineering plans.
“We are currently refining the master plan. This 575-kilometer-long Giant Sea Wall is an extraordinarily large project," AHY said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that execution will begin in the most vulnerable coastal sectors, starting with Jakarta Bay, through close coordination with the Jakarta Provincial Government.
Beyond Jakarta, the minister identified coastal regions in Central Java - specifically Semarang, Kendal and Demak - as priority zones heavily impacted by land subsidence and recurring tidal floods.
The overall mega-project will be divided into over a dozen distinct segments stretching across northern Java from west to east.
While preliminary and physical groundbreakings are being scheduled, AHY stressed that concrete walls alone cannot solve Java's coastal crisis.
He emphasized that long-term mitigation requires comprehensive spatial planning spanning upstream to downstream areas, including strict regulations against excessive groundwater exploitation and upstream watershed management to prevent runoff flooding.
In addition to hard coastal infrastructure such as concrete dikes and sea walls, the project will incorporate nature-based solutions - particularly mangrove ecosystem restoration - to provide faster, environmentally sustainable protection against coastal erosion.
