Jakarta (ANTARA) - MT Mauhau, a tanker operated by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, helped rescue passengers from the KMP Virgo Transport 08 after the passenger and roll-on roll-off (roro) ship sank in the Java Sea on Sunday.

The MT Mauhau, sailing from Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, to Tuban, East Java, received information about the incident via VHF radio.

"After learning that a vessel had sunk near its route, the MT Mauhau’s captain and crew immediately responded by heading to the site and helping evacuate the victims," PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Vice President of Corporate Communication, Kitty Andhora, said in Jakarta on Sunday.

As of the latest report, 16 people, including the KMP Virgo Transport 08 captain, had been evacuated onto the MT Mauhau. One survivor reportedly suffered a leg injury and was receiving treatment from the MT Mauhau’s crew.

Kitty said the rescue effort demonstrated Pertamina personnel’s professionalism, concern and commitment to prioritising safety and helping others, particularly during emergencies in its operating and shipping areas.

"After receiving information that a vessel had sunk, the MT Mauhau’s captain and crew immediately took steps to assist the rescue. Saving lives is our top priority and we are grateful that 16 people have been evacuated," Kitty said.

During the operation, the MT Mauhau also coordinated with the Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office. The Banjarmasin SAR team was traveling to the incident site to continue search and rescue operations.

Several other vessels, including the TB TCP 205 and KMP Haidar, also joined the rescue effort.
