Bill fixing term of barangay, SK officials for Marcos’ signature – Gatchalian

MANILA, Philippines – The bill that fixes the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to five years has already been transmitted to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian gave the information on Thursday.

The measure – Senate Bill No. 2397 – effectively postpones the upcoming polls in November.

The House of Representatives also adopted the bill.

The legislative piece also moves the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections, for a second time, from the first Monday of November 2026 to the second Monday of November 2028.

It also sets the tenure of barangay officials at two terms, while SK officials will be allowed only one term.

“We have sent it to the president, and as far as I know, there is no news that he will veto it. So the incumbent officials will be extended for an additional two years,” Gatchalian told the media.

According to the Senate leader, the bill was transmitted to the Office of the President on Wednesday for Marcos’ review and possible approval. /apl
